Aims
Peer Mediation aims to educate students on the value of peer-to-peer support. The program helps students identify issues among peers, and teaches them skills for resolving low-level conflicts. The program supports students in becoming more responsive to their peers, and knowing when and how to pass on bigger issues to school staff.Program theory
The Peer Mediation program recognises the serious long-term effects that school bullying and unresolved conflict can have on an individual and school yard culture. Peer Mediation is based on educating students on the value of peer-to-peer support and pro-social behaviors. The introduction of peer support and peer mediation programs has been proven to have a long-term preventative effect on the incidence of bullying by contributing to the development of positive relationships and a safe school culture (McGrath, H & Stanley, M 2006).Topics
The program covers: Awareness of body language; understanding feelings (empathy); active listening and reflecting back what is heard; effective questioning (use of open and closed questions); assertion; brainstorming.Cost
