In education settings, empowerment is encouraging and supporting children to become competent and capable citizens who can contribute to their world.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child outlines fundamental principles. When embedded in learning environments, these principles support empowerment through:
- Growing positive relationships
- Valuing children as competent learners, decision-makers and active contributors to their everyday world
- Critical reflection resulting in educator intentionality with philosophy, pedagogy, practices, processes and curriculum.
