Learning communities working together

Be You supports learning communities to work towards a continuous approach to wellbeing.

Apr 27, 2020

Primary and secondary schools, early learning and school age care services can implement Be You collaboratively and together grow a mentally healthy generation.

Be You is for all Australian educators

Be You’s birth to 18 framework is designed for every Australian educator.

It provides a shared language for learning and talking about wellbeing and impels learning communities to come together to achieve common goals in relation to mentally healthy communities.

Ways of working together

Here are some ways that learning communities can work together to implement Be You:

  • Action Team Leaders can communicate with each other about how they are implementing Be You at their place
  • Staff can engage in Be You Professional Learning together
  • Action Teams can be formed across settings, with representatives from early learning and school age care services, primary and secondary schools – and common goals and actions can be planned, implemented and reviewed together
  • Be You resources can assist learning communities to consider education transitions through a mental health lens, and collaboratively plan transition activities across a community.

Collaboration in practice

Bethany Christian School and their Early Learning Centre (ELC), In Paralowie, South Australia, have begun to work together to implement Be You.

The ELC has been participating in Be You and the former KidsMatter Early Childhood initiative since 2017. Early in 2019 conversations began between the ELC Director and Be You Action Team Leader, Emily, and the school’s Diverse Learning and Wellbeing Coordinator, Suzi.  As a result, the school registered to participate in Be You as a whole learning community.

ELC educators have presented to school staff some of their mental health learning and actions from the past two years. Emily and Suzi are now planning to meet to discuss how learning and actions can be shared across settings.

They are excited about moving forward with Be You together, and the collaboration between the ELC and school this will facilitate:

“Many staff have already benefited from accessing Be You Professional Learning modules and the wealth of other informative resources on the Be You website.

"We look forward to continuing to grow in understanding and ability to promote wellbeing and respond effectively to mental health needs of students, families and staff.

"Be You Consultants have provided valuable support and inspiration as they partner with us in nurturing a mentally healthy learning community,”  said Emily Bondarenko and Suzi Pedler.

To get started, register your school, early learning or school age care service with Be You and talk to a Be You Consultant about how you can collaborate across education settings.
