Use this resource to grow a shared understanding of children’s empowerment

Empowerment is seeing and understanding children as competent and capable young citizens who can contribute to their world.

Planning for Empowerment can support you to reflect on how everyone in your learning community understands empowerment. Consider how our values, beliefs and biases influence our perspectives in relation to children.

Explore what influences children’s empowerment

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child contains fundamental principles which when embedded into learning environments supports empowerment through:

  • Growing positive relationships
  • Valuing children as competent learners, decision-makers and active contributors to their everyday world
  • Critical reflection resulting in educator intentionality with philosophy, pedagogy, practices, processes and curriculum

Understand the rights of children and embed them in everyday practice

Empowering environments support children’s rights. The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child explains that children need opportunities to learn and enact their rights.

Planning for Empowerment: Growing a mentally healthy generation contains reflective questions that can support your team to practically consider how we listen, hear and respond to children’s voices and how children are learning about, understanding and enacting their rights.

Explore the connections between Be You, the National Quality Standard and empowering environments
